Turn a spare phone into a baby monitor
Put one phone next to the cot and listen on yours — in the kitchen, in the garden or at the neighbours'. Free, no account, nothing to buy; the other parent or a grandparent can listen too.
How it works
Create a room on the baby's phone
A broadcast room with a room PIN (Settings → "Manage PINs"), then "Start broadcasting". Keep the phone plugged in, a metre or two from the cot.
Scan its QR code with your phone
Your phone joins in the browser — tap "Listen". The room keeps the same link and QR code night after night.
Hear every sound
The level bars move with each sound, and the status at the top tells you if the connection drops.
Why parents use SpeakMic
Private with a room PIN
Only someone with the PIN can listen. The sound travels encrypted between the phones and isn't kept on our servers.
The whole family can listen
Both parents, a grandparent or a babysitter at once — each on their own phone.
Keeps going with the screen off
In the SpeakMic Android app the baby's phone keeps sending and yours keeps playing with the screen locked.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install anything?
No — both phones can use the browser. For the night, the SpeakMic Android app is the better choice on the baby's phone: it keeps broadcasting with the screen locked, where a browser may stop the microphone once the screen goes off.
Can I listen from outside the house?
Yes. The phones don't need to be on the same network — each just needs WiFi or mobile data, wherever it is.
What if there's no internet, on holiday or camping?
SpeakMic Offline for Android connects the phones directly over WiFi Direct and Bluetooth, with no internet — the two phones only need to be within range of each other.
Quiet sounds don't come through — what can I do?
On the baby's phone, open Settings → "Microphone settings" and turn off noise reduction: it is made for speech and can filter out quiet sounds like rustling or whimpering.
Can I see the baby or talk to them?
A broadcast carries sound one way, from the baby's phone to yours. For a picture and sound both ways, start a 1-to-1 video call between the two phones ("Video call" in the home page's ⋮ menu, where it's available).
How do I keep the baby's phone from waking anyone?
Turn on do-not-disturb so calls and notifications don't ring by the cot, keep it plugged in, and let the room's standby screen turn it almost black. Place it a metre or more from the cot, never inside it.
Can I rely on it like a real baby monitor?
Treat it as a convenience, not a safety device: it isn't certified, it needs the connection and both batteries to hold, and it gives no alarm when sound stops coming. Glance at the status on your phone now and then, and follow safe-sleep advice.
