Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a group voice call?
It works like a radio: one person speaks at a time, only while holding the button. Everyone else's microphone stays closed, so there's no crosstalk, background noise or echo from a dozen open mics.
Can two people talk privately without leaving the room?
Yes. Tap a teammate and call them: once they accept, the two of you talk directly, both at once like on a phone, while the room goes quiet for you (or plays softly in the background). You stay in the room, and when the host calls everyone, you hear it in the call too. The host turns private calls on for the room — when creating it or later in its settings.
Does it work with the phone's screen locked?
In a phone browser the audio can stop once the screen locks. The SpeakMic Android app keeps the room running with the screen off, like a real walkie-talkie in your pocket.
Do I need a radio licence?
No. SpeakMic runs over the internet, not on radio frequencies, so there's nothing to license and no range limit beyond having a connection.
Can I talk without holding the button?
Yes. Tap "VOX" under the talk button and SpeakMic opens the channel when you start speaking and closes it after a moment of silence - handy when your hands are busy. Holding the button still works, and in the Android app VOX keeps working with the screen off.
